Working in a young and burgeoning industry is often exciting, often frenetic and always fascinating.
Sometimes, however, we like to pause for a moment and have a think about the direction social is taking. We’ve put together a short list of predictions for the shape social will take in 2012.
Foursquare, the pioneer in location based networking hit a milestone this week. It passed the ten million user mark. Sounds impressive, but is it? Yes and no. More to the point, it is a case of needing to look beyond the numbers.

We’re all a-hop with excitement at the arrival of our very own Rabbit Gowalla stamp.
Not content with launching a social media loyalty card for bmibaby earlier in the month utilising Gowalla, we wanted to make sure we had a stamp of our own.
If you’re interested in the rise of photo-sharing networks such as Instagram, then this 15 minute interview between Techcrunch’s Alexia Tsotis, and the Instagram founders is well worth sitting through.
The headline - in just six months, the service has racked up three million users. To put that into perspective, the leader in location based services, Foursquare, took around eighteen months to hit that point (and is now on around 7.5 million).
Being in Austin for the SXSW interactive festival has given us an enormous amount of food for thought.
Not least, we’ve had an insight into what the world looks like when location based check ins are the norm and not the exception, with both Foursquare and (Rabbit favourite) Gowalla being pretty much unavoidable in town.
The future of location based networks is just one of the things we’ll be sharing in a post SXSW Rabbit feed.
